Johannigman Excavating, Inc. is a family-owned excavation contractor based in Greensburg, Indiana and serving Indianapolis, Columbus, Greensburg, and the surrounding areas. We’ve been developing sites across the region for nearly fifty years, but our family roots are as important now as they’ve always been.
Johannigman Excavating was founded in the 1960s by Roman Johannigman, who started with a single bulldozer, clearing land on his own farm and for a few neighbors. As word spread, Roman began traveling around the area performing groundworks, excavations, and more.
With the help of his seven sons, particularly John and Ed, who took a liking to the work, Johannigman Excavating was established. Since then, the company has become the leading excavation contractor for Greensburg, Columbus, Indianapolis, and their surrounding areas, taking great pride in their role in the local economy by developing land for residential and commercial projects of all sizes, and never tiring of helping customers accomplish their vision.
Roman Johannigman bought his first bulldozer in the 1960s. He started by clearing land on his own farm, then helped a few neighbors. Before long, Roman was traveling throughout the area doing groundwork and excavation. That one dozer sparked what would become a multi-generational family business.
In 1978, Roman handed over the reins—John and Ed purchased his two bulldozers and officially launched Johannigman Excavating. The early years weren’t easy. The economy was tough, and both brothers worked second jobs to stay afloat. But their persistence paid off. Their strong work ethic and commitment to quality laid the groundwork for the company’s growth
As John and Ed built the business, their own children—Bob and Trent (John’s sons) and Brad (Ed’s son)—spent summers working on job sites. They learned the ropes firsthand and eventually joined the company full time. With the next generation on board, Johannigman Excavating continued growing while staying rooted in family values.
After three decades in the business, Ed decided to step away in 2008 to pursue other interests. Bob purchased Ed’s shares, becoming a key partner alongside John. With a renewed sense of leadership and energy, the company continued its upward trajectory.
In 2023, John officially retired from the business. Bob purchased his remaining shares, becoming the sole owner of Johannigman Excavating. Today, Bob continues to lead the company into the future with the same integrity, grit, and pride that has defined the Johannigman name for over 50 years.
Now recognized as one of the top excavating contractors across Greensburg, Columbus, Indianapolis, and beyond, Johannigman Excavating remains true to its roots. With a legacy built on hard work, family, and a deep commitment to the land, the team continues to bring customer visions to life—one project at a time.
